We're Taking a Break

I finally busted out the ol’ swiffer and did a lap around the apartment. Since giving the cat back to the shelter, I really haven’t felt the urge to clean, because, well, there weren’t piles of hair, flaked-off cat nails, and remnants of my furniture floating around anymore. But I gave the cat back in October, so you can imagine the nastiness that began piling up in corners and under tables. It’s amazing how much better the floor looks after a quick swif, and you realize it takes all of four minutes if you live in a shoebox like I do.

However, I have a bigger problem: Cleaning out my music library. This can’t be done with a swiffer. This is more like cleaning out the fridge after months of leftovers and vegetables building up, molding, and composting in the dark depths.

I realized that there are bands I listen to that I need to take a break from. These bands must be removed, avoided, taken off the ipod. Because like eating the same leftover tuna noodle casserole every night (my dinner this week), I’m getting sick of the same songs. Oh sure, they’re fine, and they’re always there, but there are just so many new bands with new songs I can dedicate my time to.

So here’s my list of bands I’m not allowed to listen to for at least six months. It’s not long, but it’ll make a noticeable dent in my daily music fix. And some, you may say, should never have been in rotation in the first place. Judge, go ahead, but you know you listen to them too.

Counting Crows: This shouldn’t need explaining. The 90s are long gone.

The National: Apparently they’re depressing. I just think I’ve overplayed them. Which is a depressing fact, what with all the great new music out there.

Iron and Wine: Hey, lets fall asleep to someone else this year. Or with someone else. Heyo, just kidding. Sort of.

Matchbox 20: No matter how unwell i am, Rob Thomas will not solve my problems. Next.

Deathcab for Cutie: The word death sums up the way most of these songs make you feel. I don’t listen often, but I shouldn’t listen at all.

And the last one - this is a big one. I’m not going to be able to pull this off very well, but maybe just through March? I don’t know.

Wilco: Jeff can be a real downer, too emotional, and clearly I’m cutting myself off from emotional, weighty, ‘nobody gets me’ music. And while ‘Shot in the Arm’ isn’t any of the above, it will lead to wanting more. It’s a gateway song to other sad Wilco songs, and I am weak. Maybe California Stars? No.

Artists I’m going to overplay for the next few months:

Shout Out Louds
Sea Wolf
Magnetic Fields
Spoon
The Drums
Hot Chip
Freelance Whales

And this song, because it effing rocks.

Out of the Blue / Julian Casablancas
